They're both the same. To have better options is not only to think of ANOTHER person.. that other person may be you too. A person is able to kill him/herself to return to life as a better person. To kill oneself is to kill the old self in you and start a new life based on the bitter lessons of the past. Thus; whether you choose the first or the second its the same really.
Read this lovely story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, its called "White nights".
